Necessary Weather

March 24 at 7:30 p and March 25 at 2:00p

NECESSARY WEATHER. Based on a concept by choreographer and dancer Dana Reitz, and created in collaboration with lighting designer Jennifer Tipton, Necessary Weather is an inquiry into the climates of movement and light. Performed by Reitz and dancing collaborator Sara Rudner, in silence with a subtle score that finely weaves light and movement, Necessary Weather is a journey along the edges of dream and real time. When the work premiered in 1994, Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times wrote, “Every dance performance uses theatrical lighting, but none has explored the interaction of light and movement with such striking originality as Necessary Weather.”

NECESSARY WEATHER touring included the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Festival d’Avignon, the London Dance Umbrella, The Festival d’Automne in Paris, Culturgest in Lisbon and Rivolit Teatro Municipal in Porto, Portugal. In 2009, at Arnie Malina’s invitation, the work was recreated for performance at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts (Vermont), which was made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius. Since then, it has been performed at the Baryshnikov Art Center in New York.

Restless Eye

February 9, 2012 at 7:30p

DAVID NEUMANN/ advanced beginner group believes in making multi-disciplinary dances from scratch, bringing to gesture, word, and proximity a delighted embrace of our contradictory lives. Neumann utilizes experimental dance –making approaches with a humorous outlook and an inclusive layering of disciplines to create complex, thought-provoking dance works that push the form. Neumann’ explorations challenge his assumptions on ‘how to make dance’ giving each work a distinct geography with which the viewers can examine their own assumptions. These approaches are born of the belief that there is always something more to think and feel, always another mind to engage in surprising ways, always a valuable effort in trying to bend the habitual gestures around new shapes.

In RESTLESS EYE, Advanced Beginner Group explores the realm between thought and behavior, between describing life and experiencing it. Through a collision of digital technology and a deeply physical vocabulary, Restless Eye will bring together the madness of everyday events with the vast patterns that shape our inexplicable lives. Ultimately, it’s how we bring our attention to what’s in front of us that allows art to transform us as creators and observers.  LEARN MORE

Prophets of Funk

November 5, 2011 7:30p and November 6, 2011 2:00p

PROPHETS OF FUNK is an evening that celebrates Sly and the Family Stone’s groundbreaking, visceral, powerful music, and the struggles and celebration of everyday people. Dorfman and Sly and the Family Stone find common purpose in the prophetic possibilities of music and dance that invite everyday people to find ardor in the muck and mess –– the funk –– of life. Prophets of Funk seeks to lift up the spirit of Sly: insisting that in the face of this funk, there are still hopes and aspirations that reside in all of us.

For this performance DDD has invited previous collaborators OBIE Award winning dramaturge Alex Timbers, creative consultant/scholar-in-residence David Kyuman Kim, and media designer Jacob Pinholster to join forces again with the company and deepen a dynamic engagement of movement driven by the popular ––and populist–– sounds of Sly and the Family Stone. Performer for this project include: Kyle Abraham, Meghan Bowden, David Dorfman, Luke Gutgsell, Renuka Hines, Raja Kelly, Kendra Portier, Jenna Riegel, Karl Rogers, and Whitney Lynn Tucker. LEARN MORE…

UNDERGROUND RIVER, winner of a 1998 BESSIE Award as a “risk-taking and profound theatrical tour de force,” is an exploration of the rich fantasy life of a girl who appears to the outside world to be unconscious. Singing a cappella songs by Toshi Reagon and interacting with the magical visual creations of master puppeteer Basil Twist, the dancers dwell in a world of magic realism and eccentric beauty unseen by those who wish to make her “well.” LEARN MORE…
